Arms of God combat - five weapons firing simultaneously at demon hordes

The weapon merge system is what separates Arms of God from every other bullet heaven on Steam. You carry five weapons at once, and you can merge any new weapon drop into an existing one — sacrificing the donor to permanently boost the base weapon. Getting merges right is the difference between clearing a level in 30 seconds and dying on the same wave 10 times. Here is everything the tutorial does not tell you.

How Weapon Merging Works

You have 5 weapon slots. All weapons auto-fire simultaneously — you do not aim, you just position. When a new weapon drops, you choose: equip it (replacing a slot) or merge it (sacrificing it into an existing weapon).

A merge transfers stats from the sacrifice weapon into the base weapon. The base weapon keeps its own damage type, attack pattern, and visual model. The sacrifice weapon disappears — you lose it permanently for that run.

The golden rule: never merge a weapon you might want to keep. Once merged, it is gone until the next run. I learned this the hard way when I merged a legendary drop into a common weapon in Act 1 thinking I would find another one later. I did not.

Stat Inheritance & Rarity Transfer Rates

Weapons drop in four rarities: Common (white), Rare (blue), Epic (purple), Legendary (gold). The rarity of the sacrifice weapon determines how much of its power transfers to the base:

  • Common sacrifice: transfers roughly 60% of stats — usable for early-game merges, wasteful after Act 1
  • Rare sacrifice: transfers roughly 70% — the workhorse merge tier, most of your mid-run merges will be Rare
  • Epic sacrifice: transfers roughly 80% — the sweet spot, high enough return that you feel it immediately
  • Legendary sacrifice: transfers roughly 90% — save these for your final two weapon slots only

The base weapon's rarity also matters but less than the sacrifice. A Legendary base with a Rare sacrifice is weaker than a Rare base with a Legendary sacrifice. Prioritize high-rarity sacrifices over high-rarity bases.

Actual numbers from testing: I tracked damage before and after 50 merges across different rarities. A common-to-common merge gave about 12% DPS increase. A legendary-to-legendary merge gave about 35%. The gap is real and it compounds — two legendary merges on the same weapon roughly double its final DPS.

Elemental Synergy Bonuses

Merging weapons of the same damage type gives a hidden bonus that the game never explains:

  • Fire + Fire: extra projectiles per volley — you shoot one additional bullet for every two merges of the same fire type
  • Lightning + Lightning: expanded chain range — each merge adds roughly 15% more chain distance
  • Holy + Holy: bonus healing output — if your build includes any life steal or regen, holy merges amplify it
  • Mixed elements: no penalty, but no hidden bonus either — you get exactly the stat transfer with no extras

This is the mechanic that reshapes how you draft weapons. If you commit to fire early and merge fire into fire three times, you are shooting nearly twice as many projectiles as someone who spread merges across random elements. The game weights future drops toward the element you already have equipped, so committing pays off.

Merge Timing: When to Merge vs. When to Hold

Act 1 (levels 1-15): Do one merge when you find a Rare+ duplicate of a weapon you already use. Do not hunt for merges — save gold for blessings. A single well-timed Act 1 blessing purchase is worth more than three early merges.

Act 2 (levels 16-30): Two merges minimum before the mid-boss. You should have at least one Epic-rarity merge online. If you have not found an Epic sacrifice by level 25, start merging Rares aggressively — a suboptimal merge now beats a perfect merge after you are dead.

Act 3 (levels 31-45): Three to four merges. Synergies matter here. If you have been stacking the same element, the bonus should be noticeable — extra projectiles, longer chains, more healing.

Act 4 (levels 46-60): Full build online. Four to five merges across your weapon slots. At least two should be elemental-matched for the synergy bonus. The final boss has rotating damage resistances, so spreading across at least two damage types (Fire + Holy or Lightning + Fire) is safer than monotype.

Merges to Avoid

  • Merging your only weapon of a damage type: If you merge your only Lightning weapon into a Fire base, you lose Lightning coverage entirely. Keep at least two damage types represented across your five slots.
  • Merging early and often: Every merge costs a weapon drop you could have equipped instead. In Act 1, having more weapons in more slots usually beats having one merged weapon and three empty slots.
  • Merging into a weapon you plan to replace: If you are holding a Common weapon and hoping for a Legendary drop in the same slot, do not merge into the Common. You lose the sacrifice when you swap.

Cathedral Meta-Progression & Merges

The Armory station in the Cathedral hub permanently unlocks new weapon models into the drop pool. This is important for merges because: more weapon variety means more chances to find matching elements for elemental synergy. Unlock at least 15-20 weapons in the Armory before you start seriously optimizing merges per run.

The Alchemy Chamber upgrades your blessing quality, which indirectly boosts merges — a weapon with +30% damage from blessings gains more from a merge than a weapon with no blessing support.

Quick Reference: Merge Priority by Rarity

If you have limited gold and need to decide which merge to do:

1. Elemental match + Legendary sacrifice: always worth the gold, do it immediately

2. Elemental match + Epic sacrifice: do it before the next boss

3. No elemental match + Legendary sacrifice: still strong, prioritize over non-matching Epics

4. Non-matching Rare sacrifice: only if you are struggling and need immediate power

5. Common sacrifices after Act 1: skip entirely, save the gold

Arms of God rewards planning ahead. The difference between a random merge build and an intentional one is not subtle — intentional builds clear waves in half the time and survive bosses with health to spare. Pay attention to what you are feeding into what.
