Why Play Paladin?

The Paladin is the most forgiving starter character in Arms of God. His passive grants +20% max HP and 15% damage reduction from the first upgrade, making early Act 1-2 mistakes survivable. More his Divine Form (Radiant Bastion) grants 3 seconds of invulnerability on activation and heals 30% max HP — a panic button that saves a run multiple times.

Where he excels: Extended boss fights where trading hits is inevitable. His sustain lets him outlast enrage timers that kill squishier characters.

Where he struggles: Speedrunning. His base movement speed is 10% lower than the Assassin or Sniper, and his attacks favor slow, heavy weapons.

Passive Tree Priority

Paladin's passive tree has 12 nodes. You get one point per level up (max 20 in a run). Spend in this order:

1. Sacred Bulwark (Level 2): +20% max HP. The cornerstone of Paladin survivability. Always pick first.

2. Divine Aegis (Level 4): Reduces all incoming damage by 15%. Stacks multiplicatively with blessing-based DR, giving roughly 28% total DR with one Iron Skin blessing.

3. Wrathful Strikes (Level 6): +15% damage to stunned or slowed enemies. Paladin has easy access to stuns through heavy weapons, making this a reliable damage boost.

4. Holy Resolve (Level 8): Reduces crowd control duration by 50%. The difference between dying in a stun-lock and walking out of it.

5. Righteous Zeal (Level 10): +10% attack speed when above 50% HP. Paladin should always be above 50% HP if built correctly, making this a permanent buff.

6-12: Prioritize defensive nodes (Tenacity, Iron Will) over offensive ones. Paladin wins through attrition, not burst.

Best Weapon Merges for Paladin

S-Tier: Guardian's Shield (Base) + Blood Stone (Sacrifice)

Block reflects 30% damage + heals 5% of blocked damage. This turns Paladin's already-tanky shield into an offensive weapon. Against Act 4 boss Divine Engine Omega, each blocked attack deals roughly 400-600 reflected damage while healing 70-100 HP.

Why it works on Paladin specifically: Paladin's passive block chance (15% baseline, vs 5% for other characters) makes this merge proc 3x more often. With the Bulwark tree maxed, block chance reaches 50%, meaning every other hit is free damage+heal.

A-Tier: Godslayer's Blade (Base) + Stormcaller's Spear (Sacrifice)

Chain lightning on every 5th hit. Paladin's attack speed with one-handed swords is fast enough (roughly 1.2 attacks/sec) to proc chain lightning every 4 seconds. The chain hits 4 additional enemies, clearing trash mobs while the Paladin tanks the boss.

A-Tier: Void Reaper (Base) + Phoenix Wing (Sacrifice)

Life steal on kill + revive on death. The revive gives Paladin a second life each act. Combined with Radiant Bastion, you get three effective lives per act — the highest survival margin in the game.

Optimal Blessing Priority for Paladin

| Priority | Blessing | Why |

|------|------|------|

| 1 | Guardian Angel | Free fatal hit save. With Paladin HP pool, you survive with enough HP to recover. |

| 2 | Frost Armor | 20% max HP shield per room. On Paladin's large HP pool, this is roughly 400-600 effective HP per room. |

| 3 | Blood Harvest | Double gold + health orbs. More gold means more weapon merges. |

| 4 | Vampiric Touch | 3% lifesteal. With Paladin's attack speed and survival time, this adds up to thousands of HP per act. |

| 5 | Iron Skin | Another 15% DR. Combined with Paladin's base 15%, you reach roughly 28% DR. |

Avoid: Glass Cannon, Martyr's Oath, Berserker Rage. These punish taking damage — Paladin's whole playstyle is about absorbing hits.

Divine Form: Radiant Bastion

Radiant Bastion is Paladin's ultimate ability. When activated:

  • 3 seconds of complete invulnerability — you take zero damage, ignore all crowd control

  • Heals 30% max HP over the duration (roughly 600-900 HP depending on build)
  • 30-second cooldown — meaning you can use it roughly once per major fight

When to pop it:

  • When you see a boss telegraphing a big hit (Varek's charge, Archon's lightning storm)
  • When you're below 40% HP with no potion cooldown
  • Right before entering a gauntlet room (pre-shield after Frost Armor is consumed)

Don't pop it for: Minor trash mob damage, chip damage above 60% HP, or as a panic button without a plan. The 30-second cooldown means misuse leaves you exposed for the entire next room.

Playstyle Tips

Room entry: Let the enemy come to you. Paladin's strength is sustained damage, not burst. Stand near the entrance, let the mobs cluster, then AOE them down with chain lightning or shield reflects.

Boss positioning: Stay at close-medium range (just outside melee swing range). This baits the boss into using telegraphed melee attacks that you can block, while still being close enough to punish recovery frames.

Resource management: Paladin can afford to skip healing items — your passive regen combined with Vampiric Touch keeps you topped up. Spend saved gold on weapon upgrades and Cathedral offerings.

Synergy builds:

  • Tank Lord: Guardian Shield + Blood Stone, Frost Armor + Iron Skin + Vampiric Touch. Near-immortal.
  • Retribution Paladin: Godslayer's Blade + Stormcaller's Spear, Divine Intervention + Executioner + Blessing of Haste. High damage while maintaining survivability.
  • Support Paladin (co-op): Guardian Shield + Blood Stone, Guardian Angel + Frost Armor + Blood Harvest. Your survival enables rezzing teammates.

Act-by-Act Strategy

Act 1: Build economy. Take Blood Harvest if offered. Focus on one-handed sword or mace weapons — they give the best balance of speed and damage for early Paladin.

Act 2: Find your first weapon merge. Prioritize Guardian's Shield. If you find Godslayer's Blade, start building toward the Retribution build instead.

Act 3: Your build should be online by now. You need at least one S or A-tier merge and 3+ good blessings. Use Radiant Bastion on the Archon of Storms lightning phase to skip the most dangerous mechanic.

Act 4: Full build. With Paladin's survival tools, you can tank the final boss's phase 2 and phase 3 mechanics that one-shot other characters. The fight becomes a war of attrition — and Paladin always wins attrition.
