Arms of God Hidden Mechanics — 15 Things the Tutorial Never Tells You
The Tutorial Teaches You 30% of the Game
The Arms of God tutorial covers movement, attacking, and the basic UI. It does not explain dodge iframes, blessing scaling, weapon merge math, drop manipulation, or the dozen other mechanics that separate a 15-minute Act 4 clear from dying on floor 3.
Here are the 15 mechanics the game never explains.
1. Dodge Iframes Are in the Middle, Not the Start
The tooltip says "dodge to avoid damage." What it means: you are invincible during frames 5-11 of the 16-frame dodge animation. The startup (frames 1-4) and recovery (frames 12-16) have no protection.
What this means: Dodge INTO attacks, not away from them. If you dodge away, the enemy attack travels with you and hits during your recovery frames. If you dodge through the attack, the iframe window overlaps the hit.
Dual Blades exception: Dual Blades get extended iframes (frames 3-14) because of their lighter weight class. This is why they are the best beginner weapon — you get nearly twice the invincibility window.
2. Blessing Scaling Is Not Uniform
Each blessing scales with a different weapon stat. This is the single most important mechanic in the game and it is not mentioned anywhere:

The implication: A fast weapon with Thunder gets chain lightning every 0.4 seconds. A hammer with Thunder gets it every 2 seconds. The hammer does more damage per chain, but not 5x more. Fast weapons win with Thunder, Frost, and Wind. Heavy weapons win with Flame and Void. Holy is equal for all.

3. Weapon Merge Is Not 1:1 Stat Transfer
The merge system says "transfers stats from donor to target." The reality:
- Same-element merge: 90% stat transfer + bonus effect (Fire: extra projectiles, Shock: extended chain range, Holy: added pierce)
- Different-element merge: 75% stat transfer, no bonus
- Legendary donor: ~85% transfer rate
- Common donor: ~55% transfer rate
- Same weapon type (sword→sword): +10% transfer bonus
The implication: Always merge same-element. The bonus effects are worth more than the raw stat difference. A 55% same-element merge with bonus projectiles outperforms a 75% cross-element merge without.
4. You Can Manipulate Weapon Drops
The game biases drops toward your currently equipped element. If both your weapons are Fire, roughly 60% of drops will be Fire weapons. This is intentional — it helps you build coherent loadouts.
How to use this: Commit to an element by Act 2. If you keep swapping elements, your drops stay diluted and you never get the synergies you need.
Switching both weapons to a new element mid-act will shift future drops toward that element within 3-4 rooms.
5. The Combo Counter Affects More Than Score
The hit counter in the top-right corner is not just for bragging rights:
- 50 hits: +5% damage
- 100 hits: +10% damage, +5% attack speed
- 200 hits: +15% damage, +10% attack speed, +5% movement speed
- 500 hits: +20% all stats, enemies drop 50% more Gold
The combo resets if you go 5 seconds without hitting anything. This is another reason fast weapons are strong — they build and maintain combo effortlessly.
6. Boss Attacks Have Audio Tells
Every boss attack has a unique sound that plays BEFORE the visual indicator. Learning these audio cues gives you roughly 0.5 extra seconds to react compared to watching for animations:
- Archon of Storms: Rising electric hum = lightning strike
- Forgotten King: Metal scrape = charge attack
- Fire Elemental: Crackling intensifies = fire nova
- Divine Engine: Deep bell toll = phase transition
Play with headphones. The audio mix is surprisingly good for an indie game.
7. Environmental Damage Works Both Ways
Explosive barrels, falling chandeliers, spike traps — these damage enemies too. A barrel explosion does roughly 200 damage to everything in range, which is more than most weapon hits at equivalent levels.
Bait enemies near hazards, trigger them, and let the environment do the work. Particularly effective against Golems and Shield Bearers who are too slow to avoid hazard damage.
8. Status Effects Stack Multiplicatively
If an enemy is frozen (Frost) AND burning (Flame) at the same time, the damage calculation is: base damage × 1.5 (frozen vulnerability) × 1.3 (burning defense reduction) = 1.95x damage. The effects multiply, not add.
Temperature Shock (freeze + instant flame proc) adds another 1.5x multiplier on top: 1.5 × 1.3 × 1.5 = 2.925x damage. This is why Frost + Flame is the meta combo.
9. Weapon Swap Has I-Frames Too
The weapon swap animation (roughly 0.3 seconds) has 5 iframes. In an emergency, you can swap weapons to dodge an attack if your actual dodge is on cooldown. The timing is tight but learnable.
The first attack after swapping deals 30% bonus damage. This is called the "swap strike" and some speedrun strategies revolve entirely around constant swapping.
10. Elite Enemies Have Hidden Spawn Conditions
Elites (the larger, glowing variants) do not spawn randomly. They appear when:
- You have not taken damage for 3+ rooms (penalizes safe play)
- You kill a room in under 20 seconds (rewards fast clears)
- Your combo counter is above 100 (rewards aggression)
If you want more elite spawns (better drops), play aggressively. The game rewards risk-taking.
11. Cathedral Bonuses Are Account-Wide
Cathedral upgrades apply to ALL characters on your account, not just the current one. If you are struggling with a new class, go back to your main, farm Cathedral upgrades, and return. The bonuses persist.
This is the intended progression path for alts — farm endgame on your main, funnel Cathedral bonuses to your alts.
12. The Pause Menu Does Not Actually Pause
Against bosses, the pause menu continues counting buff durations. If you pop a 10-second damage buff and pause, the buff timer still ticks. On Steam Deck, sleeping the device mid-fight will unpause to a dead character.
Plan your buff usage around this. Use buffs immediately before damage windows, not preemptively.
13. Door Transitions Have Loading Zones
The short hallway between rooms is a disguised loading zone. Enemies cannot follow you through doors. If a room is going badly, you can retreat through the door you entered, wait for cooldowns, and re-enter. The room state resets (enemies return to spawn positions, but keep their current HP).
14. Falling Off Ledges Is Not Instant Death
There are a few areas in Act 3 and 4 with bottomless pits. Falling off deals 30% of your current HP and respawns you at the ledge. It is survivable. In some cases, intentionally falling to escape a corner is correct — 30% HP is better than dying.
15. Daily Quests Are Worth Doing
The quest board in the hub refreshes daily. Quests reward Divine Essence (5-10 per day), Gold (1,000-3,000), and occasionally Blood Crystals (rare). For 5-10 minutes of effort, these are the most time-efficient rewards in the game.
Priority quests: Any quest rewarding Blood Crystals > Divine Essence > Iron Shards > Gold.
