Best Ranged Build: Highest DPS Gun Loadout

Arms of God guide screenshot — best ranged build

Ranged builds are the current meta in Arms of God. Every speedrun record, every Act 4 no-hit clear, every community leaderboard entry as of June 2026 uses a ranged-dominant loadout. Melee has its niche — the Paladin's Sanctified Buzzsaw build clears trash efficiently, and the Martyr's Final Sacrifice explosion can one-shot bosses — but ranged builds have higher damage uptime, safer positioning, and better blessing scaling.

The math is straightforward. A melee weapon requires you to stand within enemy attack range to deal damage. A ranged weapon doesn't. In Act 4, where elite enemies fire overlapping bullet patterns and bosses cover 60% of the screen with AoE, the difference between standing at range and standing in melee is the difference between clearing the Act and restarting the run.

This guide covers the mathematically optimal ranged loadout for maximum DPS, along with the character pairings, blessings, Cathedral upgrades, and merge strategies that make it work.

Why Ranged Builds Dominate the Current Meta

Three mechanical reasons explain why ranged weapons outperform melee in the June 2026 build.

Damage uptime. A Hellfire Magnum fires at any enemy within its targeting cone regardless of where you're standing. A Righteous Blade only hits enemies within its arc, which requires you to be close. In a room with 40+ enemies, the Magnum is dealing damage 100% of the time while the Blade deals damage only when enemies are within melee range — roughly 60-70% uptime in practice. Over a 90-second wave, that's 30+ seconds of lost damage.

Blessing scaling. Ranged blessings (projectile count, attack speed, range) multiply each other. Projectile count increases the number of bullets. Attack speed increases how fast they fire. Range increases how long they travel before expiring, increasing the number of on-screen projectiles. A melee weapon benefits from attack speed and damage but cannot benefit from projectile count (most melee weapons fire a fixed number of swings) or range.

Safety floor. Kiting — moving away from enemies while firing backward — is the fundamental survival technique in Arms of God. Ranged weapons let you kite indefinitely. Melee weapons force you to periodically close distance, creating vulnerability windows that Act 3 and Act 4 elite enemies punish hard.

Best Ranged Weapons Ranked

This tier list ranks ranged weapons purely on DPS output, blessing synergy, and consistency across all four Acts. It assumes max weapon rank and full Cathedral upgrades.

S-Tier (Build-defining DPS)

| Weapon | Damage Type | Base DPS | Key Trait |

| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| Infernal Repeater | Fire | ~180/sec at rank 5 | 12 rounds/sec, 8-stack burn cap |

| Hellfire Magnum | Fire | ~320/hit at rank 5 | Highest single-hit damage in game |

| Brimstone Pistols (Twin Pistols evolved) | Fire | ~150/sec at rank 5 | Fire rate merge donor, dual-wield |

Infernal Repeater is the best ranged weapon in the game. Twelve rounds per second at base fire rate, each applying a burn stack. At 8 stacks dealing ~40 DPS at max rank, the Repeater's burn damage alone contributes 320 damage per second. Stack fire damage blessings and the burn ticks reach 70+ DPS per stack — 560+ damage per second from burns alone. No other weapon comes close to this total output.

Hellfire Magnum is the boss killer. Its base damage per shot is roughly double any other weapon at equivalent rank. With crit chance and crit damage blessings, a single Magnum crit can hit for 4,500+ damage. In boss fights where you need burst damage between attack patterns, the Magnum is unmatched.

Brimstone Pistols evolve into Twin Pistols at rank 5, gaining dual-wield capability and a 25% fire rate bonus. More they are the best fire rate merge donor in the game. Merging Brimstone Pistols into any other ranged weapon transfers a significant fire rate increase — often 30-40% at max Pistol rank.

A-Tier (Excellent, consistent performers)

| Weapon | Damage Type | Base DPS | Key Trait |

| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| Purifier's Crossbow | Holy | ~130/sec at rank 5 | Pierces 3 enemies, elite bonus damage |

| Ember Cannon | Fire | ~140/sec charged at rank 5 | Charged AoE, fire pool creation |

| Stormcaller | Shock | ~120/sec at rank 5 | Chains to 5 targets, density scaling |

| Seraph's Judgment | Holy | ~125/sec at rank 5 | Piercing holy AoE, wide coverage |

Purifier's Crossbow has inherent elite bonus damage (+25% at rank 5), making it the best weapon for elite-heavy waves. Its piercing trait means three enemies take full damage per bolt, significantly boosting effective DPS against clustered enemies.

Ember Cannon charges for 0.8 seconds then fires an explosive round that deals AoE damage and leaves a fire pool. The fire pool damage stacks with burn damage and scales with fire damage blessings. In corridor-heavy Act levels, one charged shot can clear an entire hallway.

Stormcaller chains to 5 targets at base rank. With chain count blessings and the Stormcaller character's +1 chain passive, it hits up to 7 targets per projectile. Against the dense enemy waves of Act 3 and Act 4, the effective DPS multiplier is enormous.

Seraph's Judgment fires piercing holy projectiles in a wide arc. It excels during the Seraph's flight ability but is strong on any character with holy damage investment.

B-Tier (Solid fillers, situational)

| Weapon | Damage Type | Base DPS | Key Trait |

| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| Crusader's Shotgun | Holy | ~110/sec at rank 5 | Wide spread, close-range burst |

| Chain Lightning Rifle | Shock | ~100/sec at rank 5 | Kill-chaining, secondary chain |

| Sacred Bow | Holy | ~105/sec at rank 5 | Long-range, backline targeting |

| Incendiary Rounds Launcher | Fire | ~115/sec at rank 5 | Area denial, stackable fire pools |

Crusader's Shotgun fires wide-spread pellets ideal for close-range trash clearing. It falls off against bosses (spread means fewer pellets hit a single target) but excels in early waves.

Chain Lightning Rifle is Stormcaller's little brother — chains on kill rather than on hit. Strong as a secondary chain weapon but doesn't match Stormcaller's output.

Sacred Bow targets the furthest enemy, making it useful for picking off backline ranged enemies that other weapons ignore. Situational but valuable in specific Act 4 layouts.

Best Character Pairings for Ranged Builds

Three characters scale disproportionately well with ranged weapons.

The Inquisitor — Maximum Fire DPS. The Inquisitor's +25% fire damage passive makes every fire damage blessing 25% more effective. With an Infernal Repeater primary and Hellfire Magnum secondary, the Inquisitor achieves the highest sustained DPS in the game. The burn damage from Infernal Repeater at 8 stacks, multiplied by fire damage blessings and the passive, reaches absurd numbers — 700+ damage per second from burns alone by Act 4.

Loadout: Infernal Repeater (primary) > Hellfire Magnum > Brimstone Pistols (fire rate merge donor) > Ember Cannon > Incendiary Rounds Launcher.

The Stormcaller — Chain Lightning Cascade. The Stormcaller's +1 chain jump passive stacks multiplicatively with chain count blessings. A Stormcaller weapon that chains to 5 base targets chains to 7 with the passive and chain blessings combined. Against dense waves, this is a 7x DPS multiplier. Ranged chain weapons (Stormcaller, Chain Lightning Rifle) let you position for maximum chain coverage without entering danger zones.

Loadout: Stormcaller (primary) > Chain Lightning Rifle > Tesla Coil > Electro Whip > Thunderstrike Gauntlets (melee flex slot for close-range burst).

The Zealot — Glass Cannon. At 1 HP, the Zealot gets +99% damage. Ranged weapons let the Zealot maintain this bonus without the extreme risk melee would require. Stack crit chance and crit damage blessings on a Hellfire Magnum, stay at range, and land 4,500+ damage crits from safety. This is the highest theoretical DPS in the game.

Loadout: Hellfire Magnum (primary) > Infernal Repeater > Ember Cannon > Brimstone Pistols (fire rate merge donor) > Molotov Satchel.

Honorable Mention: The Seraph. During Wings of Judgment flight, the Seraph is locked into ranged attacks. Stacking ranged weapons with holy damage blessings turns flight into a screen-clearing barrage. Seraph's Judgment + Divine Arc + Sacred Bow creates overlapping holy projectile coverage that few enemies survive.

Blessing Priority for Ranged Builds

Blessing selection determines whether a run succeeds or fails. For ranged builds, prioritize in this order.

Tier 1 (Must-pick, every time)

1. Projectile Count. Adding projectiles to every ranged weapon multiplies total damage output directly. One extra projectile on a 5-weapon loadout is a 20% DPS increase. Max rank projectile count blessing (+3 projectiles) is roughly a 60% DPS increase across your entire loadout.

2. Attack Speed. Faster fire rate means more projectiles per second, more burn stacks applied, more crits landed. Attack speed. reduces the charge time on Ember Cannon and the reload time on Hellfire Magnum.

3. Fire Damage (if running fire weapons). Fire damage scales both direct hits and burn ticks. At max rank, fire damage blessing adds roughly +40% to all fire weapon output.

Tier 2 (Strong picks, prioritize after Tier 1 is satisfied)

4. Range. Longer projectile travel distance means more on-screen projectiles at any given moment.. increases the effective targeting cone of every weapon.

5. Crit Chance / Crit Damage. Crits are multiplicative with all other damage sources. A Hellfire Magnum with max crit chance (~35%) and max crit damage (+150%) blessing will crit for ~4,500 damage roughly every third shot.

6. Damage (any type matching your weapons). Flat damage increases apply after all multipliers. Good, but less impactful than the multiplicative stats above.

Tier 3 (Situational, pick based on character)

7. Burn Duration (Inquisitor). Extends max burn stacks from 8 to 12 at max rank. Massive DPS increase on Infernal Repeater builds.

8. Chain Count (Stormcaller). More chain jumps = higher effective DPS against dense waves.

9. Flight Duration (Seraph). Unique blessing. Longer flight = more time dealing damage from complete safety.

Blessings to avoid on ranged builds: Knockback (pushes enemies out of your projectiles' optimal range), Melee Damage (wasted stat), HP/Armor (important but take them only when damage blessings aren't offered — dead characters deal zero DPS).

Cathedral Upgrade Priority

Cathedral upgrades are permanent account-wide bonuses purchased with Souls earned from runs. For ranged builds, the upgrade priority order is non-negotiable.

1. Gunsmith — Rank 8 minimum, aim for rank 12.

Gunsmith is the single most impactful Cathedral upgrade for ranged builds. It unlocks attachment slots on ranged weapons and increases the effectiveness of attachments. At rank 4, you unlock the first attachment slot. At rank 8, you unlock Advanced Frame (+15% fire rate on all ranged weapons). At rank 12, you unlock Extended Magazine (+25% projectile count).

Getting Gunsmith to rank 8 should be your first Souls priority. The Advanced Frame attachment alone is worth roughly 15% more DPS across your entire loadout.

2. Training Ground — Rank 10 minimum.

Training Ground increases base HP. Even ranged builds need survivability — Act 4 elite bullet patterns are dense enough that you will take hits regardless of positioning. Rank 10 Training Ground gives enough HP to survive 3-4 hits instead of 1-2, which is the difference between clearing a wave and dying to chip damage.

3. Alchemy Chamber — Rank 6 minimum.

Alchemy Chamber increases the rarity of offered blessings. Higher rarity blessings have stronger effects at lower ranks. At rank 6, you see rare blessings roughly 40% of the time instead of 25%. For a build that depends on specific blessing synergies (projectile count, fire damage, crit), better blessing quality is worth more than raw Souls efficiency.

4. Armory — Rank 8 (weapon unlocks).

Armory unlocks new weapons for your starting pool. Infernal Repeater unlocks at Armory rank 4, Hellfire Magnum at rank 6, Brimstone Pistols at rank 8. You cannot run the optimal ranged loadout without these unlocks.

5. Bell Tower — Rank varies by character.

Bell Tower provides character-specific bonuses. Prioritize it after the above four are at their minimum ranks. The Inquisitor's Bell Tower bonuses (ranks 4, 8, 12) add fire damage and burn duration — worth pushing Bell Tower for fire builds specifically.

Upgrade Priority Summary: Gunsmith 8 > Training Ground 10 > Armory 8 > Alchemy Chamber 6 > Gunsmith 12 > Bell Tower (character-dependent) > Shrine (shop discounts are nice but lower impact than the above).

Weapon Merge Strategy

Merging weapons transfers key stats from the donor weapon to the recipient. The right merges can double a weapon's effective DPS. The wrong merges waste Souls and weapon slots.

Merge Route 1: Infernal Repeater (Primary DPS)

  • Wave 1-5: Merge Brimstone Pistols (fire rate) into Infernal Repeater immediately. The fire rate increase brings the Repeater from 12 to ~16 rounds per second — a 33% DPS increase.

  • Wave 10-15: Merge a second Brimstone Pistols (fire rate) if available. Stacking fire rate merges has diminishing returns but the second merge still adds ~10% more rounds per second.
  • Wave 20+: Merge Incendiary Rounds Launcher (AoE radius) into Infernal Repeater. This gives the Repeater's bullets a small AoE splash, dramatically improving wave clear against clustered enemies.

Merge Route 2: Hellfire Magnum (Boss Killer)

  • Wave 1-5: Merge Brimstone Pistols (fire rate) into Hellfire Magnum. The Magnum's 2.1-second reload is its biggest weakness. Fire rate merge reduces reload time to ~1.4 seconds.
  • Wave 10-15: Merge a damage donor (any fire weapon) into Hellfire Magnum. The Magnum's high base damage means flat damage increases are proportionally more valuable.
  • Wave 20+: Merge Ember Cannon (charged shot AoE) into Hellfire Magnum. The Magnum's single-target shots now create small fire pools on impact, adding AoE to your boss-killing weapon.

Merge Route 3: Stormcaller (Chain Clearing)

  • Wave 1-5: Merge Chain Lightning Rifle (chain count) into Stormcaller. The Stormcaller gains additional chain jumps.
  • Wave 10-15: Merge Electro Whip (range) into Stormcaller. Extended range on chain jumps means chains can reach enemies across the screen.
  • Wave 20+: Merge Shock Baton (stun chance) into Stormcaller. Stunned enemies are chain fodder.

Merge Donor Priority: Brimstone Pistols (fire rate) > Chain Lightning Rifle (chain count, for shock builds) > Incendiary Rounds Launcher (AoE radius) > Ember Cannon (charged shot effect) > any weapon with high base damage.

Act-by-Act Ranged Build Strategy

Act 1 (Waves 1-8): The Foundation

Your goal in Act 1 is to assemble the core of your loadout and complete your first merge.

  • Weapon priority: Secure Brimstone Pistols in the first three waves. They are the best early-game ranged weapon and double as your first merge donor.
  • Merge timing: Merge Pistols into your primary DPS weapon by wave 5 at the latest. Delaying this merge means losing DPS during the wave 7 difficulty spike (first elite wave).
  • Blessing selection: Take projectile count or attack speed over damage. Multiplicative stats outscale flat damage by Act 2.
  • Souls spending: Save Souls for weapon purchases. Don't buy blessings in the shop during Act 1 unless a Tier 1 blessing appears.
  • Positioning: Kite clockwise around the arena perimeter. Most Act 1 enemies have linear attack patterns; circling trivializes them.

Act 2 (Waves 9-16): The Power Spike

Your loadout should have 3-4 weapons by now. This is where ranged builds pull ahead of melee.

  • Weapon priority: Fill all 5 slots. An empty slot is 0 DPS. Even a B-tier ranged weapon in slot 5 is better than nothing.
  • Merge timing: Complete your second merge (damage donor into primary) by wave 12. Wave 13 introduces the first multi-elite wave.
  • Blessing selection: Start specializing. If running fire weapons, prioritize fire damage. If running shock, prioritize chain count. Hybrid damage types dilute blessing efficiency.
  • Souls spending: Buy weapons to fill slots first, then start buying blessings. A full loadout with mediocre blessings outperforms a half-loadout with good blessings.
  • Positioning: Act 2 introduces flanking enemies that spawn behind you. Keep moving — standing still for more than 2 seconds is a death sentence.

Act 3 (Waves 17-24): The Scaling Check

Act 3 tests whether your blessing synergies are online. Enemies have 3x the HP of Act 2 enemies. Without multiplicative blessing scaling, your TTK (time-to-kill) will be too high and you'll get overwhelmed.

  • Weapon priority: Your primary and secondary weapons should be at rank 4-5 by now. Use the shop to buy rank-ups if necessary.
  • Merge timing: Complete your third merge (AoE or utility donor) by wave 20. Wave 21-24 are elite gauntlets.
  • Blessing selection: If you don't have at least rank 3 in your primary damage type blessing by wave 20, your run is at risk. Buy blessings aggressively in the Act 3 shop.
  • Souls spending: Shift spending from weapons to blessings. Weapon ranks are important but blessing ranks become the bottleneck in Act 3.
  • Positioning: Elite enemies in Act 3 fire bullet patterns that cover 40% of the screen. Identify safe zones (typically screen edges opposite the elite's facing direction) and hold position there, only moving to dodge.

Act 4 (Waves 25-30): The Final Gauntlet

Act 4 is the hardest content in the June 2026 build. Bosses have ~80,000 HP. Elite waves contain 4+ elites simultaneously. Bullet patterns overlap to the point where perfect dodging is impossible without ranged weapons.

  • Weapon priority: All 5 weapons should be rank 5 by wave 25. If not, you entered Act 4 under-leveled.
  • Merge timing: All merges should be complete. If you have spare weapons, merge them into your primary for raw damage.
  • Blessing selection: By Act 4, you should have: max rank projectile count, max rank attack speed, rank 4+ in your primary damage type, and at least rank 3 crit chance/crit damage.
  • Positioning: The Act 4 boss (final wave) has a three-phase attack pattern. Phase 1: horizontal bullet sweep — stand at the bottom of the screen. Phase 2: radial bullet burst — stand at maximum range and weave between projectiles. Phase 3: berserk mode (rapid fire) — focus purely on dodging, let your burn/shock DoTs finish the boss.
  • Survival tip: In wave 28-29 (elite gauntlet before the boss), prioritize survival over DPS. Kite more than you shoot. A dead DPS character deals zero damage.

FAQ

Q: Can I run a hybrid melee/ranged build or should I go full ranged?

A: Full ranged is currently stronger, but one melee flex slot is acceptable — especially on characters with melee passives like the Paladin or Martyr. If you do include a melee weapon, use it as an emergency close-range tool (slot 4 or 5, not primary or secondary) and do not invest blessings into melee-specific stats. Hybrid damage type builds (fire + shock + holy split across your loadout) underperform because blessings can only specialize in one direction. Pick one damage type and commit.

Q: What if I haven't unlocked Brimstone Pistols or Infernal Repeater yet?

A: The Crusader's Shotgun is the best early-game ranged weapon and is available from Armory rank 2. Pair it with Purifier's Crossbow (Armory rank 4) and Sacred Bow (Armory rank 3) for a holy-damage ranged build that works well through Act 3. The fire build (Infernal Repeater + Hellfire Magnum) is optimal but not required to clear all four Acts. The ranged playstyle — kiting, maintaining distance, prioritizing projectile count and attack speed — works with any ranged weapon combination.

Q: How important is the Gunsmith Cathedral upgrade really? Can I prioritize Training Ground instead?

A: Gunsmith to rank 8 is non-negotiable for ranged builds. The Advanced Frame attachment (+15% fire rate on all ranged weapons) is the single largest DPS increase available from any Cathedral upgrade. Training Ground is important (dying ends runs) but should come after Gunsmith 8. The Souls cost from rank 1 to 8 in Gunsmith is approximately 2,000 Souls, which is achievable in roughly 15-20 full runs. Prioritize Gunsmith first, then catch up Training Ground.

Q: Does this build work for endless mode when it releases?

A: Endless mode was not available in the June 2026 Early Access build. The developer has confirmed it on the roadmap for a future update. Ranged builds will likely remain strong in endless mode due to their safety advantage — surviving longer in endless mode is more about avoiding damage than maximizing DPS. That said, endless mode may introduce enemy HP scaling that makes burn/shock DoT builds even more valuable relative to burst builds, since DoTs deal percentage-based damage in some roguelite endless modes. We'll update this guide when endless mode releases.
