Arms of God Best Weapons for Beginners — Top 10 Starter Weapons for Your First 10 Hours
Why Beginner Weapon Choice Matters
Your first 10 hours in Arms of God determine whether you stick with the game or quit at the Act 2 boss. The weapon you pick at character creation and the first 3-4 drops you equip shape your entire early-game experience. Pick wrong, and you are fighting the controls as much as the enemies.
The weapons in this list share three traits: easy to unlock (most are default or drop by Act 1), forgiving if you miss timing, and strong enough that they do not fall off until mid-game.
S-Tier Beginner Weapons
1. Dual Blades (Default — Assassin Class)
Dual Blades are the best starter weapon in the game hands down. They have the fastest attack speed of any melee weapon, which means more hits per second, which means more blessing procs. The dash i-frame window is twice as long as the tooltip says — you get roughly 12 frames of invincibility instead of 6. On floor 3 and above, that extra half-second is the difference between clearing a room and restarting.
Attack speed: 2.4/s. Range: short. Best blessing pairing: Frost (slow stacks per hit, Dual Blades freeze-lock bosses in about 3 seconds).
2. Holy Crossbow (Unlock: Clear Act 1)
Ranged, piercing, and the bolts track slightly after passing through an enemy. The Holy Crossbow solves the biggest beginner problem — getting swarmed — by letting you thin crowds before they reach you. The pierce means one bolt hits 3-4 enemies in a line, and the holy damage type means free healing ticks if you pair it with the right blessing.
Attack speed: 1.1/s. Range: full screen. Best blessing pairing: Thunder (chain lightning per hit, each pierced enemy counts as a separate hit).
3. Frostbite Blade (Unlock: Reach Level 5 with any Ice weapon)
Technically a mid-tier weapon in the full tier list, but for beginners it is S-tier because of the freeze mechanic. Two hits apply a slow. Four hits freeze the target for 2 seconds. Against the Act 2 boss — which is where most new players hit a wall — landing a freeze during the charge attack animation cancels it entirely. That alone puts it on this list.
Attack speed: 1.5/s. Range: medium. Best blessing pairing: Flame (freeze → instant flame proc = temperature shock bonus damage).
A-Tier Beginner Weapons
4. Burning Pike
Long reach, fire damage over time, and the thrust attack hits twice if you time it at max range. The DOT means you can tag an enemy, dodge away, and let the fire finish them. Very forgiving playstyle. Available as a random drop from Act 1 elites.
5. Sunforged Hammer
Slow but hits like a truck. The charged heavy attack does AoE damage in a cone, which is rare for an early-game weapon. Not ideal for boss fights because of the wind-up, but for clearing rooms of trash mobs it is unmatched. Pair with a fast secondary weapon for bosses.
6. Stormcaller Bow
The only bow that does not require you to stop moving while charging. You can strafe at full speed with the arrow drawn. Shock damage chains to nearby enemies without needing a blessing. Unlocks after your first zone 3 clear.
7. Heavy Axe
Available from character creation (Berserker class). High raw damage, wide swing arc, and the ground slam special staggers everything in a small radius. The downside is recovery time — if you miss, you are vulnerable for about 0.8 seconds. For beginners, use it against large groups where you cannot miss.
8. Consecrated Mace
Holy damage, moderate speed, and a passive that heals 2% of max HP per 5 kills. That passive alone makes it the safest weapon for learning boss patterns — you make mistakes, you heal back. Drops from the cathedral area in Act 2.
9. Water Spear
Fast thrust attacks with a long reach. The hidden mechanic: holding the attack button charges a thrown version that pierces everything in a line. Most beginners never discover the throw because the game never tells you. Fully charged throw does 3x normal damage. Unlock by reaching the Act 2 water temple.
10. Fist Weapons (Iron Gauntlets)
The default for the Monk class. Extremely fast, zero range, but the dodge attack has iframes on startup instead of mid-dodge — meaning you dodge INTO attacks, not away from them. Counter-intuitive for beginners but once you learn the rhythm, you become nearly untouchable. Highest skill floor on this list, highest ceiling too.
Weapon Progression: What to Swap When
| Hours 1-3 | Use whatever drops. Learn enemy patterns. Do not invest upgrade materials yet. |
| Hours 3-6 | Pick one weapon from S-tier above. Start upgrading it. Commit to an element. |
| Hours 6-10 | Add a secondary weapon that covers your primary's weakness. Dual Blades + Holy Crossbow covers melee/ranged perfectly. |
| Hours 10+ | Start experimenting with build synergies — see our [Best Builds guide](/guides/arms-of-god-best-builds-meta-guide-2026) for meta loadouts. |
Common Beginner Weapon Mistakes
Upgrading too many weapons. Upgrade materials are scarce before Act 3. Pick two weapons and invest deeply. Spreading upgrades across 5 weapons means all five are mediocre.
Ignoring attack speed as a stat. New players tunnel on raw damage numbers. Attack speed matters more because it scales blessing procs. A fast weapon with 50 damage hits harder in practice than a slow weapon with 120 damage, once blessings are active.
Never using the weapon swap. You carry two weapons for a reason. Swap mid-combo for bonus damage on the first hit after swapping. Some blessings specifically trigger on swap.
Picking weapons based on tier list alone. The full [weapon tier list](/guides/arms-of-god-weapons-tier-list-guide) ranks all 60 weapons at endgame. Several S-tier endgame weapons are terrible for beginners because they require specific blessings or high-level upgrades to function. Start with the weapons on this page, transition later.
