Arms of God Best Starter Class — Which Character to Pick First [2026]
Pick Your First Character
You start with two characters: Knight and Ranger. Both are viable through endgame, but they teach different skills.
Knight — The Forgiving Choice
Playstyle: Sword and shield. Block, counter, and trade hits favorably. Difficulty: Easy (survivability forgives mistakes) What you'll learn: Enemy attack patterns, blocking/parry timing, melee positioning. Best for: Players new to action games or roguelites.
Knight's shield blocks 100% of frontal damage. This lets you observe enemy attack patterns safely — hold block, watch the enemy's full attack string, then counter. No other starting character has this safety margin.
Ranger — The Learning Choice
Playstyle: Bow and ranged attacks. Stay at range, aim for headshots, kite enemies. Difficulty: Medium (positioning errors are punished) What you'll learn: Spacing, kiting, enemy movement prediction. Best for: Players with action game experience who want to learn the game's movement system.
Ranger forces you to learn positioning. If an enemy reaches melee range, you take full damage with no shield to save you. This is frustrating at first, but the skills transfer to every other character — positioning is the most important mechanic in Arms of God.
Recommendation
Start with Knight for Acts 1-2. Learn enemy patterns in a safe environment. Then switch to Ranger for Acts 3-4 to learn positioning. This combo prepares you for any character.
What NOT to Do
Don't unlock Assassin first (even though she's the strongest DPS). Assassin's 650 HP is the lowest in the game and requires knowing every enemy pattern. Unlock her 3rd or 4th after you've learned the basics.
